What is punk?

The punk tree (Melaleuca quinquenervia (Cavanilles) S.T. Blake) is so called for its spongy bark which is reminiscent of punk—wood partially decayed by fungus (Polyporus spp.). Wood becomes spongy as fungus digests the lignin. Known in Middle English as tachewood (touchwood), punk smolders and was used to catch the spark from a hand drill or flint. Pest-resistant Eggplant Under Development For South Asia

Cornell researchers and Sathguru Management Consultants of India have successfully led an international consortium through the first phase of developing a pest-resistant eggplant. By about 2009 this eggplant is expected to be the first genetically engineered food crop in South Asia. Farmers have grown genetically altered cotton in India since 2002. New Hope For Horse Lovers As Effective Control For Killer Ragwort Is Proposed

Scientists propose developing an environmentally-friendly fungal spray that would specifically target Ragwort, infecting and killing the weed at a critical growth stage. This spray will contain a host-specific, plant pathogenic fungus as the active ingredient and will have no side-effects on non-target organisms and pose no threat to the environment. It would therefore provide a quick, safe and effective means for controlling Ragwort. [Click here to read more...]

Genetically Engineered Corn Could Harm Aquatic Ecosystems

New Pheromone Sprayer Leads Amorous Moths Astray

For decades, apple and pear growers have "adorned" their orchards with hundreds of plastic dispensers that emit a chemical sex attractant, or pheromone, to disrupt codling moth mating. Now, thanks to Agricultural Research Service (ARS) studies in Wapato, Wash., growers could soon be spraying the pheromone instead. [Click here to read more...]

Welcome to our readers around the world!

Welcome: Anguilla!

Location: Caribbean, islands between the Caribbean Sea and North Atlantic Ocean, east of Puerto Rico

Background: Colonized by English settlers from Saint Kitts in 1650, Anguilla was administered by Great Britain until the early 19th century, when the island - against the wishes of the inhabitants - was incorporated into a single British dependency, along with Saint Kitts and Nevis. Several attempts at separation failed. In 1971, two years after a revolt, Anguilla was finally allowed to secede; this arrangement was formally recognized in 1980, with Anguilla becoming a separate British dependency.

(Location and Background are from the CIA, The World Factbook. Click here to see a map of Anguilla and to read more about this county and its people..)
