Stapelia gigantea N.E. Brown is commonly called the Zulu-giant, giant toad plant, or carrion-flower. Carrion-flower suits best; the flower is often smelled long before it is noticed. In this instance, I was searching for a dead squirrel or bird when I came upon the flower. (See Plants of the Week 07/15/2002 and Renfield's Gareden August 15, 2001.)
Description: No six degrees of separation here. The quote is Kevin Bacon's in the 1989 movie Tremors. The background image is the carrion flower, a succulent whose bloom smells like rotting flesh. The main effect on the flower was created using the accented edges filter in Photoshop 6.
