Lavenders (genus: Lavandula) are native to the Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic islands, areas with dry summers and mild winters. In 1597, John Gerard described three "Lavander Spikes"—"floures of a blew colour", "milke white floures", and one "altogether lesser...the floures of a more purple colour" in his Herbal. These appear varieties of 'English' lavender (Lavandula angustifolia Miller).

Gerard commented, "In Spaine and Languedocke in France, most of the mountains and desert fields, are as it were covered over with Lavander. In these cold countries (Northern Europe) they are planted in gardens". (The Herbal, or General Historie of Plants, 1633 edition)

"Lavander", according to Gerard, "is hot and drie, and that in the third degree, and is of a thin substance, consisting of many airie and spirituall parts. Therefore it is good to be given any way against the cold diseases of the head, and especially those...beginning not of abundance of humours (nasal congestion, runny nose)...." He warned against lavender's use if "...there is abundance of humours...it is not then to be used safely..."

"Cold diseases" of Gerard's day were those that had no apparent external cause. He recommended, "The distilled water of Lavander smelt unto, or the temples and forehead bathed therewith, is a refreshing to them that have the Catalepsie (coma from a hysterical cause), a light Migram (migraine), & to them that have the falling sicknesse (epilepsy), and that use to swoune (faint) much.

"The floures of Lavander picked from the knaps...the blew part, mixed with Cinamon, Nutmegs, and Cloves...given to drinke...doth helpe the panting and passion of the heart, prevaileth against giddinesse, turning, or swimming of the braine, and members subject to the palsie (trembling)." One has only to consider the corsets, petticoats, and stiff lace to understand why ladies in those days carried small bottles of lavender water.
