Sweet Williams (Dianthus barbatus Linnaeus) are native to the Pyrenees, the Carpathian Mountains, and the Balkans. The plants were well established in English gardens by the 1500s. John Gerard (The Herbal, 1633 edition) knew the wide-leafed varieties as sweet Williams and the narrow-leafed as sweet Johns.
Gerard appeared proud of his sweet Williams, "We have in our London gardens a kinde hereof bearing most fine and pleasant white floures, spotted very confusedly with reddish spots, which setteth forth the beauty thereof: and hath bin taken of some...to be the plant called of the later Writers Superba Austriaca, or the Pride of Austria." In 1633, Thomas Johnson added, "It is now commonly in most places called London-Pride."
Sweet Williams, especially the older varieties, are lightly fragrant and were used as nosegays. Out of character with most of his writing, Gerard dedicated almost three pages to describing various sweet Johns and sweet Williams, plants for which he had no practical uses. "These plants are kept and maintained in gardens more for to please the eye, than either the nose or belly."
Perhaps Gerard was charmed by the plants (or the ladies that wore them) for he did grant that sweet Williams had virtues, "These...are not used either in meat or medicine, but esteemed for their beauty to decke up gardens, the bosomes of the beautifull; garlands and crownes for pleasure."
