Dwarf Red Hardy Azalea Among the hardiest of evergreen Azaleas, this award-winner's botanical name means "Mist of the Morning Sun."

It brings life to shady spots year-round, with vivid, rose-crimson flowers for weeks in early spring and bright red foliage all winter. Dwarf Red Hardy Azalea grows 2-3' high with similar spread. Ideal for northern exposures, where few colorful shrubs thrive. Shipped in 4" pot. The toxic qualities of azalea honey were probably well known to the ruler of Pontus, a kingdom on the shores of the Black Sea. Mithridates VI received a Greek education before ascending to the throne. He had probably read the works of Xenophon who with 10,000 mercenaries fled Persia 300 years earlier. (See Plants that Changed History July 17, 2001)

Mithridates VI had engineered a revolt of the kingdoms around the Black Sea against Roman rule. When Pompey's troops went in to recapture these areas, jars of azalea honey had been left out in 'tribute' to the advancing soldiers.

The Roman troops enjoyed the gifts of honey, but soon fell ill from the grayanotoxin produced by the Pontic azalea (Rhododendron luteum). The soldiers too sick to fight were slaughtered by the "barbarians".

Eventually, Rome regained control of the Black Sea area. But Mithridates and two of his daughters committed suicide rather than fall into the hands of the Romans.

Foundation Sun Perennial Garden

Springhill Nursery®

No part of a landscaping plan is more important than the foundations of your home. Without plantings, they are often the least attractive part of the house. Yet, these areas are the ones most often seen by homeowners and visitors alike.

One of the most important things to remember in selecting foundation planting material is that you are endeavoring to enhance the house, not smother it. Often, however, foundation landscaping is just a few evergreen shrubs with perhaps an occasional panting of annuals - not the colors and textures of a coordinated planting of beautiful flowering shrubs and perennials.

This Foundation Garden is recommended for an area which will receive at least six hours of sun each day.

In this collection you will receive:

3 Belladonna Delphiniums
3 Pink Canterbury Bells
3 Super Shasta Daisies
3 White Balloonflowers
3 Clustered Bellflowers
