The tipitiwitchet (Dionaea muscipula Ellis) is an outlandish plant native to the Carolinas. It is a diminutive marvel; a plant that waits for prey, then closes on a meal. Tipitiwitchets inhabit boggy places with peculiar names like pocosins or Carolina bays.

The tipitiwitchet's leaves are highly specialized. Unlike the sensitive briar which collapses in response to a stimulus, the blade of the tipitiwitchet folds. Both are considered thigmonastic movement, but the tipitiwitchet's motion seems sinister and premeditated. (See Weird Plants, October 25, 2001)

On each face of the leaf blade are two or three trichomes (trigger hairs). When an insect of sufficient size brushes a trigger, the leaf is primed to close. When any of the triggers are touched again, the blade folds with the spines intermeshing. If there is no further movement from the trapped object, the leaf stops closing and begins resetting itself. A struggle from the prey is necessary to continue the process. The blade changes shape until the spines are pointing outward and the edges of the leaf seal together.

The tipitiwitchet leaf carries on photosynthesis, manufactures nectar to attract insects, traps the prey, manufactures digestive enzymes, and absorbs the nutrients. The plant is very specific. The nectar it makes does not attract butterflies and the enzymes only act on insect proteins. Animal flesh decays and kills the leaves.

It is thought the sequence of events is a cascade of biochemical and mechanical reactions. The energy for the trapping comes from adenosine triphosphate (ATP) made during photosynthesis. Triggered leaves show a marked decrease of ATP. Plants subjected to artificial triggering decline and eventually die.

Tipitiwitchets are perennials and much more than curiosity plants. They are that oddity that makes life interesting. Unfortunately, the wild plants stand close to extinction because of pollution and loss of habitat. If they should all disappear will anyone in the future believe they ever existed?

The Library at the University of Chicago contains historical environmental photographs. To view a photograph of a tipitiwitchet in its habitat taken circa 1900, click on the link:

The Carolina bays are an unusual collection of geological formations across the southeastern U.S. George Howard has put together a comprehensive study of the bays. To learn more, click on the link:

Lacewings are the best all-purpose predator for your garden or greenhouse. The larvae have a ferocious appetite for aphids, mealybugs, immature scales and whiteflies, thrips, spider mites and other plant pests.

Comments: About 10 lacewing eggs per plant or 1,000 eggs per 200 square feet will control a moderate aphid population. For best results, we recommend three successive releases.

As a preventative measure, use 1,000 eggs per 900 square feet. If larvae haven't reduced pests in a week, release another batch or use another form of control.

We ship at the proper time for your area or on the date you specify.

Sta-Home™ Lady Beetles

Gardens Alive!®

$20 off $40

They stay longer in your garden, cleaning up aphids and other pests!

Adult lady beetles and their larvae are an excellent, non-chemical way to control aphids, Colorado potato beetles (egg stage) and other insect pests in your garden.

But unlike the lady beetles sold by most other companies, ours are:

...screened to remove patasitoid-infested beetles
...ready to lay eggs the day you release them
...hungry for pests!

Click here - $20 FREE off your first order at Gardens Alive!

Up to 20% of the lady beetles shipped by other companies are parasitized. So, not only will their lady beetles die shortly after you receive them, but they'll also release parasitoids that will kill any lady beetles previously in your garden.

Our Sta-Home lady beetles arrive healthy and ready to feed on pests! Females immediately lay eggs, which provide a second wave of pest-eaters within a week. And these larvae, which can't fly, have an even bigger appetite than the adults!

We precondition our lady beetles by feeding them a healthy diet to encourage egg laying. We also remove all parasitoid-infesting beetles so they don't attack your purchased or existing beetles.

One package of about 900 Sta-Home adults will produce more than 10,000 pest-eating larvae in your garden within 30 days! We ship at the proper time for your area or on the date you specify.

Note: We take great care to ensure that your insects arrive safely and in good health, ready for your garden. We normally ship them on Monday or Tuesday so they arrive before the weekend.
