The pillbug (Armadillidium vulgare) is an isopod native to Europe. It arrived in North America, an accidental hitchhiker in straw or hay and other animal feed. Pillbugs are common in gardens; they are innocuous creatures living in colonies under logs or rocks, hiding by day, and venturing forth to forage on detritus at night or during cloudy humid weather. (See Renfield's Garden, July 14, 2004)

The starling (Sturnus vulgaris) is also native to Europe. It arrived intentionally; an attempt to have each bird species mentioned in Shakespeare's plays present in North America. Starlings proliferated. During migration, the vast flocks overwhelm gardens, farms, and entire towns. Starlings are an ecological disaster to native birds seizing nesting sites and competing for food resources. (See Renfield's Garden, September 15, 2004)

Pillbugs and starlings have little in common, except for an unseen player. In 1981, Dr. Janice Moore discovered that pillbugs and starlings have a common parasite, an acanthocephalan or "thorny-headed" worm.

The acanthocephalan (Plagiorhyncus cylindraceus) alternates its host during its lifetime. During its mature stage, the parasite lives in the intestinal tract of the starling and is avirulent, apparently doing little harm to the bird. The thorny-headed worm attaches to the intestinal wall and lays eggs which are shed in the starling's feces. Pillbugs, as recyclers, eat bird feces as well as other garbage.

Once inside the gut of a pillbug, the egg hatches. The parasite commandeers the pillbug's body—an infected pillbug becomes food, shelter, and transportation. Although the isopod may grow to a mature size, it never matures. This is most evident in female pillbugs; they never develop ovaries. Most of the pillbug's energy is drained for the growing parasite.

As soon as the acanthocephalan is ready for its alternate host, the behavior of the pillbug changes. The little isopod gets reckless. When other pillbugs are resting in their dark, humid colony, the infected pillbug is out wandering. Indifferent to moist dark shelter, the 'zombified' pillbug heads out into the heat and dryness of sunlight carelessly crossing over light-colored surfaces where it is easily spotted by hungry starlings.

Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia has information on acanthocephalan. To learn more about these thorny-headed worms and to view a photograph, click on the link:

Sta-Home™ Lady Beetles

Gardens Alive!®

Adult lady beetles and their larvae are an excellent, non-chemical way to control aphids, Colorado potato beetles (egg stage) and other insect pests in your garden. But unlike the lady beetles sold by most other companies, ours are:

Screened to remove patasitoid-infested beetles.
Ready to lay eggs the day you release them.
Hungry for pests!

Up to 20% of the lady beetles shipped by other companies are parasitized. So, not only will their lady beetles die shortly after you receive them, but they'll also release parasitoids that will kill any lady beetles previously in your garden.

Our Sta-Home lady beetles arrive healthy and ready to feed on pests! Females immediately lay eggs, which provide a second wave of pest-eaters within a week. And these larvae, which can't fly, have an even bigger appetite than the adults!

We precondition our lady beetles by feeding them a healthy diet to encourage egg laying. We also remove all parasitoid-infesting beetles so they don't attack your purchased or existing beetles.

One package of about 900 Sta-Home adults will produce more than 10,000 pest-eating larvae in your garden within 30 days! We ship at the proper time for your area or on the date you specify.

Note: We take great care to ensure that your insects arrive safely and in good health, ready for your garden. We normally ship them on Monday or Tuesday so they arrive before the weekend.

Weed-Aside™ Weed Killer

Gardens Alive!®

Herbicidal soap gets rid of weeds fast!

Signature Product Our tests have shown that Weed-Aside works much faster and more thoroughly than similar products. A blend of naturally occurring fatty acids, Weed-Aside kills weeds, then quickly decomposes in the soil.

You can sow seed or set out transplants in treated areas five days after application of Weed-Aside:

Affects only the leaves that it contacts directly, so you can use it around food crops, as well as around flowers and shrubs.

Controls algae and lichens, broadleaf weeds and annual grassy weeds, wherever they grow.

Won't stain brick or paving.

For best results, spray when weeds are actively growing and less than 5" tall. Works in a few hours to 2 days. (Because Weed-Aside is not a systemic herbicide, it won’t kill most perennial weeds; but multiple applications will suppress their growth.) Mix at a ratio of one part concentrate to five parts water.  Click here - $20 FREE off your first order at Gardens Alive!
