English ivy (Hedera helix Linnaeus) has long been cultivated for its graceful elegance as a wall and ground cover. Hedera is its Roman name; hederiger described someone 'wearing ivy', a show of rank. Even today, ivy-league implies wealth, tradition, and excellence. English ivy is one of five species of Hedera, members of the Araliaceae, the ginseng family. It is native to Europe, western Asia,
and North Africa.
English ivy is a woody vine that climbs by sending out adventitious roots that hold to masonry or rock. The familiar vine is actually the juvenile form; the adult plant is almost never seen. Juvenile vines frequently produce unstable mutations—a branch whose leaves differ in shape or color from the dark green, five-lobed leaves of the 'parent' vine. That branch removed, propagated, and named is an ivy cultivar. Hortus Third (L.H. Bailey Hortorium, Cornell University, 1976) lists eighty-eight named cultivars of this vine.
The cultivars must be continually repropagated by cuttings, selecting only the branches that remain 'true' to the cultivar's form. Cutting and rooting the branches keeps the ivy in its juvenile state. If the cultivar is simply allowed to grow, it will eventually revert to the original or wild type. Old ivy vines, but still juveniles, have been measured at 27 meters
(90 feet).
If allowed to freely climb a wall or tree that is greater than 5 meters (16 feet) in height, the vine will become shrubby past the point where it is no longer supported. The shrub is the adult form and looks very different from the vine; its branches are not flexible and the leaves are elliptic or ovate. It is only in the adult stage that ivy will bloom and produce berries. At this stage, the adult ivy can be cut and rooted and will grow as a garden shrub.

Ring-a-Round the Tree Garden
Springhill Nursery®
A lone tree begs to be under planted. You can be a lot more creative than simply surrounding it with Ivy, Pachysandra or Vinca. Us the Ring-a-Round the Tree Garden! Here, Caladiums are the scene-stealers. (Actually, we prefer their common name, "Rainbow Plants," because no two leaves are ever identical.) They are rich in shades of pink and red with white, lime green and cream, often creating a tricolor effect. Astilbes heighten the red and pink color emphasis. Hostas and Ferns provide long-lasting foliage contrasts. You're sure to find this garden a delight in any shady location, with or without a tree. Fills approximately 100 sq. ft. with color and elegance all summer long.
