The withywind or field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis Linnaeus) is native to Eurasia and naturalized over most temperate areas of the world. The funnelform flowers range from pale pink to white. It is a nuisance in both agricultural fields and natural habitats.
Withywind grows rapidly, covering and shading-out agricultural crops. The vines coil and twine, binding other plants into dense mats. Yields are greatly reduced in fields where withywind is present. Even John Gerard (The Herbal, 1633 ed.) commented, "...the bindweeds are not fit for medicine, but unprofitable weeds, and hurtfull unto each thing that growth next unto them."
The vines jam in machinery slowing and often halting crop harvest. The name, withywind, apparently means, 'flexibly strong, entangle'. Even when fields can be harvested, bindweed seed mixed with the crop seed reduces the value of the harvest. Crop loss is estimated in the hundreds of millions of dollars (US) per year.
Bindweed is difficult to eradicate because of its brittle root system. The roots break underground when the plant is pulled. Each piece of root remaining in the soil will send up its own shoot. Pulling the weed simply propagates it. Once bindweed blooms and sets seed, the problem increases. Seeds remain viable for up to fifty years.
As bindweed twines around a support plant, it climbs in a counter-clockwise spiral (ground upward). Under optimum conditions, the tip of the vine can grow through one complete revolution in less than one and three-quarters hours.
The Nature Conservancy in conjunction with the University of California, Davis has posted photographs of the withywind. To view the photographs, click on the link:

Herbicidal soap gets rid of weeds fast!
Signature Product Our tests have shown that Weed-Aside works much faster and more thoroughly than similar products. A blend of naturally occurring fatty acids, Weed-Aside kills weeds, then quickly decomposes in the soil. You can sow seed or set out transplants in treated areas five days after application. Weed-Aside:
- won't stain brick or paving.
- controls algae and lichens, broadleaf weeds and annual grassy weeds, wherever they grow.
- affects only the leaves that it contacts directly, so you can use it around food crops, as well as around flowers and shrubs.
|
|
For best results, spray when weeds are actively growing and less than 5" tall. Works in a few hours to 2 days. (Because Weed-Aside is not a systemic herbicide, it won’t kill most perennial weeds; but multiple applications will suppress their growth.) Mix at a ratio of one part concentrate to five parts water.

Moss Aside™ Herbicidal Soap
Gardens Alive!®
Fast control on lawns, patios and roofs
Only from Gardens Alive! Gardeners, it's time to call a spade a spade...or, in the case of moss, it's time to recognize this velvety green plant for what it really is: a weed! Moss-Aside is the best product we've found to get rid of moss quickly and naturally. Like other soap-based herbicides, it uses a blend of naturally occurring fatty acids to kill unwanted moss, algae, lichens and liverworts within hours. Moss Aside:
|
- won't stain. Use it on concrete, brick, stucco or wood- it won't cause staining.
- biodegrades completely and safely. After taking out the weeds, Moss Aside breaks down, adding beneficial potassium to the soil.
- prolongs the life of structures, such as roofs, decks, patios and other areas around your home. On wood, concrete and asphalt, a single application controls moss and algae for several months to one year.
- eliminates moss on lawns so grass can grow thicker. In addition to home lawns, Moss Aside works equally well on commercial turf, such as golf courses and athletic fields.
- can be used all around your home. Moss Aside is perfect for controlling moss, algae and lichens on bark mulch, on patios, in greenhouses, on boat exteriors and on planters. Use it on your down spouts, gutters and flashings-it won't damage or stain the metal.
Yes, moss can be attractive in its place (say, on a log deep in the forest). But when it's growing on your lawn, garden, patio or on the roof or side of your home, moss can be unsightly and is no better than any other unwelcome weed.
The active ingredients in Moss Aside cause moss and other target weeds to quickly yellow, then turn brown. Although you can use Moss Aside year-round, it works best in spring and fall. Apply it with any type of sprayer, mop, watering can or brush. To remove the dead moss or algae from treated patios, decks and other structures, pressure-wash with water one week later. 16-oz. concentrate makes up to 2.3 gallons.
