Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) is native to the rocky cliffs and scrub of the Mediterranean area. Rosmarinus is an ancient name, literally "dew of the sea", given to the plant by the Romans.
Rosemary was used in herbal medicine, "against all fluxes of blood, it is also good, especially the flowers thereof, for all infirmities of the head and brain, proceeding of a cold and moist cause, for they dry the brain, quicken the senses and memory, and strengthen the sinewy parts" (Gerard, The Herball, 1633).
Rosemary was much more than just an herbal medicine; it came to represent remembrance and friendship. Sprigs were given as tokens of friendship, carried at weddings to show love, and tossed onto caskets in remembrance of the deceased.
Roger Hackett (1607) in a sermon called "A Marriage Present" said, "Let this rosmarinus, this flower of men, ensigne (sign) of your wisdom, love, and loyalty, be carried not only in your hands, but in your hearts and heads".
