In ancient India (Sanskrit), the coconut palm was called "kalpa vRiksha", the tree which gives all the necessities of life. The palm is used in Southeast Asia and the Oceanic Islands for everything from food and medicine to ropes, canoes, and construction. In 1280, Marco Polo described the coconut, calling it nux indica, the Indian nut. This Latin name stood in European manuscripts and herbals for the next 460 years.
The botanical name, Cocos nucifera, was given to the palm by Linnaeus. Nucifera appears straight forward meaning "bearing nuts". But of the word, Cocos, most texts simply state, "derivation obscure".
John Gerard's The Herbal (1633 edition), says of the names of this palm, "...of the Indians, Cocus: of the Portugals that dwell in the East Indies, Cocco, taken from the end, wherein are three holes representing the head of a Monkey..."
India has 15 principle languages, but one hundred and ninety-two spoken dialects. Time and the evolution of languages leave the meaning of Cocus lost in antiquity. The Portuguese and Spanish are credited with introducing the coconut palm to the tropical islands of the Atlantic and the east coast of the Americas.
No coco was found in modern Portuguese except in reference to the coconut. But Spanish coco refers to the nut (seed), the palm, and to a "bogeyman".
The Barbados Tourism Encyclopedia has a short description and motion clip of a coconut vendor. To view the vendor at his trade, click on the link:

Unique Characteristics: A tropical plant native to the Highlands of the Philippines. Long strap like leaves with facinating reddish green pitchers hanging from the tips of the leaves. The rim of the pitchers secrete a nectar that attracts insects and has a small 'lid' to keep out excessive rain. Carnivorous plants were once thought to be difficult to grow, but this variety is easy to grow and provides an exotic look for a deck or patio setting in the summer months. Provide bright light and keep evenly moist and you will be rewarded with a tropical beauty.
Additional Information: Don’t use clay pots, they tend to dry out too quickly and salts from the water can accumulate and damage the plants. Rain water or distilled water is best.
