Smyrna was the ancient Greek name for the myrrh tree, but she was not always a tree. According to the Greek poet, Panyasis, Smyrna was the daughter of King Theias of Assyria. The queen bragged of her daughter's beauty, declaring Smyrna more beautiful than Aphrodite. As Smyrna grew up, she neglected the worship of Aphrodite and failed to pay

homage at her Temple.

Aphrodite was enraged that Smyrna should think herself too beautiful to worship the goddess of love. She cursed Smyrna with an unnatural love for her father and enlisted the Furies to excite the passion. With the assistance of a household slave, Smyrna deceived her father and crept into his bed.

When King Theias discovered his daughter's crime, he sentenced her to death. Smyrna fled the city with the king's soldiers and dogs in pursuit. Smyrna prayed for forgiveness and begged the gods to make her invisible. When she reached the edge of a forest, Smyrna became a twisted myrrh tree.

One day, King Theias was out hunting. Still angry with his daughter, he struck a tree with his sword. The blow split the trunk, killing Smyrna and freeing her baby Adonis.

The Naiads came to take the boy and care for the dying tree. Smyrna cried tears of fragrant sap knowing she'd never see her child grow. The Naiads used the tears of myrrh to anoint the child. The myrrh blessed Adonis with great beauty, so great that even Aphrodite fell in love with him.

"What I want to transmit through my work is a sublime gesture, one that comes from inside human beings."

Born in Lima, Leily Li studied architecture and finished her course of studies in photography. "Ever since I was a child, I liked handicrafts, so I eventually decided to learn to make jewelry," she says.

"I'd describe my work as a fusion of feelings, life experiences, techniques I've learned and love. I've crafted jewelry since 2002, and my motivation comes from the life cycle, from nature. What I want to transmit through my work is a sublime gesture, one that comes from inside human beings. Today I find myself immersed in the world of jewelry. For me, life is a poem that can be translated into silver."

Leily Li has exhibited her work in galleries and has participated in competitions at the national level.

Wollemi Pine

National Geographic®

Exclusively from National Geographic, this survivor from the age of the dinosaurs is one of the greatest living fossils discovered in the 20th century. The Wollemi pine is one of the world's oldest and rarest tree species, belonging to a 200-million-year-old plant family thought to have been extinct for more than two million years.

Previously known only from fossil records, it was presumed extinct until a single tree was found in the Wollemi National Park, Australia, in 1994. Subsequent research discovered 100 adult trees that have survived in a single canyon in this wild and rugged area.  Click here to view canyon, trees and fossil record.

You can assist in the conservation effort and enjoy the unique opportunity to ensure the continued survival of this rare species by giving the tree as a gift or growing your own. Suitable for indoor container gardening or as a landscape tree in certain areas of the U.S.

Comes with a care manual with the full story about the discovery and fascinating history of the Wollemi pine. Comes in a copper-colored container and will be approximately 10''H when shipped. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of these plants will fund ongoing conservation research.  Click here to get your Wollemi Pine and assist in the conservation effort.
