Auxin, chemically known as indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), is a plant hormone first discovered in 1926 by Frits W. Went, a plant physiologist. Manufactured from the amino acid, tryptophan, this hormone is produced in the leaf primordia (tissues that become leaves) and young leaves just below the actively growing tips (apical buds) of branches. Auxin moves
cell to cell down through the plant.
Auxin suppresses bud development; when the growing tip is pinched-out auxin production ceases, side buds begin to grow, and plants become bushy. Auxin is destroyed by sunlight; when plants face the same direction in a window auxin causes the cells on the shaded side to elongate and the plant curves toward the light. Auxin stimulates roots to form on tissues like stems and leaves, but applied to already existing roots causes them to stop growing. Minute amounts of auxin affect plants drastically; massive amounts are fatal.
Science quickly discovered that auxin would make a great herbicide. The only problem was that plants produce very little auxin and it breaks down rapidly. In 1941, the first artificial auxins, 2,4-Dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D) and 2,4,5-Trichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4,5-T) were patented—inexpensive, effective weed-killers.
Agent Orange, as well as Agents Purple, Green, Pink, White, and Blue were herbicides. Agent Orange was a mix of 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T. Used in Vietnam as defoliants, the names refer to the color-coding on the 55-gallon drums. The herbicides were mixed with kerosene or diesel fuel and sprayed from aircraft.
Leaves wilted rapidly, dried, and dropped from plants. Neither the herbicides nor the fuel should be in contact with skin, eyes, or mucosal membranes.
But the herbicide 2,4,5-T had a problem. According to the Merck Index (11th ed.,1989), 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo[b,e][1,4]dioxin (TCDD or dioxin) is a "Highly toxic and teratogenic (causes birth defects) contaminant" of 2,4,5-T. The herbicide is no longer manufactured or used in the U.S., but its contaminant TCDD "continues to generate concern because of its widespread distribution as an environmental contaminant, its persistence within the food chain, and its toxic potency." (Department of Molecular Pharmacology, Stanford University Medical Center, 1999)

Sheepskin B-3 Flight Jacket
National Geographic®
This authentic B-3 jacket became the military-issued cold-weather flight jacket in 1934, and it is still the warmest and most insulating bomber jacket made.
Aviators in WWII bombers came to rely on their B-3 jackets as they often flew their missions over Europe in unpressurized cabins, where air temperatures could drop to more than 60 degrees below zero.
|
|
Our B-3 is made from an amazingly soft and supple genuine sheepskin with a classic, aged look and deep-pile natural shearling along the body, sleeves, and collar. With double straps under the collar and straps at the waist that cinch to adjust the fit and keep out wind. Traditional leather welted seams and side-entry pockets are authentic details from the original. Made in U.S.A.
Men's sizes M (38-40), L (42-44), XL (46-48).

Vietnam: The Frontlines Collector's DVD set
The History Channel®
This EXCLUSIVE 6-volume DVD set from The History Channel is the essential collection chronicling the Vietnam War.
Included in this collector's DVD set are the following documentaries:
|
- Vietnam: On The Frontlines: Drawing extensively on the unmatched archives of CBS News and the testimony of the soldiers and correspondents, VIETNAM: ON THE FRONTLINES tells the story of the war as it happened, creating a personal and powerful portrait of the longest conflict America has ever been involved in. The four hours--America Enters the War, Tet in Saigon and Hue, Ringing Down the Curtain and The End Game--each focus on a pivotal chapter of the conflict, from Lyndon Johnson's decision to send in the troops to the final helicopter flight from the roof of the U.S. Embassy.
- Vietnam: A Soldier's Diary: An intimate portrait of a conflict doomed to failure told by the soldiers who did the fighting. These veterans talk candidly about what it was like day by day and what they did to survive Vietnam. They tell about how it felt to come home not to a hero's welcome, but to shame, nightmares, and the memories of seeing their friends killed or wounded in the hell that was Vietnam. From the optimistic hopes of a quick victory in 1965 and 1966 to the every-man-for-himself disintegration of discipline and morale of the early '70s, the course of the war and its aftermath is vividly recounted.
- Vietnam: How We Went to War: This program examines every aspect of this vexing question. Trace the development of the French Indo-China conflict after World War II and see why U.S. advisors became increasingly involved. Hear from Malcolm Brown, former AP Bureau Chief in Saigon, who had a firsthand view of the escalating tensions and was, at one point, wanted by the South Vietnamese police for his uncensored reportage. And offering a historical perspective and an overview of the U.S. policies that led to the war is George C. Herring, a historian who has written extensively on the subject.
